An observational method to determine directly the magnetic field structure of nonthermal radio sources is presented. For sources where deviations from the Faraday law at given frequencies are negligible, observations at only two wavelengths immediately allow the derivation of the internal magnetic field structure if they are spaced by λ_2_=sqrt(2).λ_1_. This method can be applied without any knowledge about the rotation measure whose value remains ambiguous. The method is discussed concerning analyses of the magnetic field structure of nearby spiral galaxies. Furthermore we propose a) observations of radio sources being located beyond (or within) a significant Faraday-rotating medium like the Milky Way and galaxy clusters and b) monitoring of variable radio sources, e.g. the class of rapidly variable (timescale hours to days) QSO cores, for which the magnetic field can be determined directly.
