For a corotating magnetospheric plasma in equilibrium under the action of gravitational, inertial, and electromagnetic forces alone, it is shown that the electric fields parallel to the local magnetic field which are implied by the proposed state of partial corotation (Alfven et al., 1974; Alfven, 1981, 1983) have consequences incompatible with the basic initial assumptions of the model. These parallel electric fields require nonzero electron pressures, thus invalidating the initial neglect of pressure forces. Inclusion in the stress balance of the force on ions and electrons exerted by the parallel electric field is shown to lead to a state of isorotation along lines of the magnetic field modified by the vorticity of the plasma, and the resulting corotation frequency would be governed by interaction with the ionosphere, and would have no relation to the gravitational orbital period.
