The pseudocontinuum of C3 has been proposed by Fix as the source of the Bond-Neff depression in HR 774. In such a case the strongest rotational lines of the 4050 Å vibrational band of C3 should be clearly evident at high dispersion. A 2.2 Å mm-1plate of HR 774 is examined in the 4050-4060 Å region where the strongest lines should form. The absence of C3 rotational lines indicates that C3 cannot be the major contributor to the Bond-Neff depression in HR 774.
