The absorption spectra of 11 quasars obtained with high resolution by Sargent et al. (1980) and Roberts et al. (1978) have been reanalyzed. A total of 39 possible absorption systems containing lines of the CO molecule together with other lines of atoms and ions has been selected. For each system of CO lines, the probability of accidental identification is estimated. It is shown that the obtained systems could arise as a result of absorption in interstellar gas of distant galaxies (Z greater than 1) lying on the line of sight between the observer and the quasar; the effects associated with the gravitational influence of these galaxies on the absorption spectra of the quasars are discussed.
