At the transit circle in Brorfelde a detailed study of the stability of the circle reading system has been carried out. Through three days and nights observations of the nadir light together with circle readings were performed with the telescope clamped. It is proved that reference lines in the circle reading micrometers can be evaded. The graduated circle has a translational displacement depending on the temperature. The nadir point of the circle varies nearly O".15/°C at higher temperatures, but less and more irregularly at low temperatures. The sum of collimation free reading and inclination varies depending on temperature near O".1/°C.
