Flat rotation curves for galaxies can be produced either by models containing a massive, spherical corona, or by models with a Mestel-disk. It is shown that it is possible to distinguish observationally between these two alternatives by comparing the galactic force function in the radial- and in the z-direction. For a Mestel-disk we find Kz/Kr ≥ 1 for z outside the disk material, while a massive corona permits Kz/Kr < 1. Now all empirical evidence for Kz, obtained from the distribution of selected stellar types in the z-direction as determined e.g. by Gort (1960) and Woolley and Stewart (1967) result in a Kz/Kr ≪ 1, even if all uncertainties of the data are considered. The dynamical evidence available thus favours a model containing a corona.
