An interpretation of the relationships between the Lick galaxy counts and atmospheric and galactic extinction leads to a simple picture in which apparent variations in the gas-to-dust ratio are mainly due to molecular hydrogen. Parameters entering into these relationships are re-evaluated. Finally, this makes it possible to map the large-scale distribution of molecular hydrogen in the local interstellar medium.
