Evidence for the identity of comet 1808 III, observed solely by Pons on 1808 February 6 and 9, with P/Grigg-Skjellerup is presented. The very good fit with three independent backward integrations of its motion, together with all circumstantial evidence, makes this identification doubtless. An extension of the observing history of P/Grigg-Skjellerup to 36 revolutions (more than for any other comet except P/Encke) has made it possible to investigate the long-term physical evolution of this comet. Contrary to earlier results of other authors, indicating a secular brightness decrease of 5 to 7 magnitudes per century, a barely discernible fading by less than 0.5 magnitude per century, with fluctuations of + or - 0.6 magnitude during the individual returns, was found. Implications of this result for the general problem of comet evolution are discussed.
