WHILE a population of hydras from the outflow of Hodson's Tarn in north Lancashire, England, was being-examined, several specimens were observed to be parasitized by Hydramoeba hydroxena (Entz). A full taxonomic description has been compiled for the hydra concerned. It is to be called Hydra graysoni and is closely related to the group of hydras which possess a plano-convex embryotheca1. Although the hydras were examined periodically since September 1968, it was only in November 1969, when they went into a depression after 3 weeks in the laboratory, that the amoebae were discovered.
