The mathematical expression of the line emission profile ψν is obtained in the case of a two-level atom plus continuum: ψν is independent of the level's populations and abundances and depends only on effective temperature, electronic density, and mean intensity Jν. In addition, the knowledge of ψν gives the opportunity to obtain a general expression of the line source function Sνl and the recovery of all the particular and possible cases for Sνl.
