O 18 / O 16 ratios of authigenic minerals are generally ten to thirty permil greater than those of detrital minerals of high temperature origin; thus isotopic compositions can be used to distinguish between the two. Isotopic compositions of authigenic or secondary minerals can be used to place limits on the conditions of their formation. Isotopic compositions of detrital minerals can be used as indicators of their provenance.
