Optical spectra of AS 201, obtained with the 1.5-m La Silla ESO telescope in 1983, show the emission lines of moderate (class 5) excitation and absorption spectrum of a G2 III star. Values of 0.45 for the interstellar extinction, and 1.5 kpc for the distance, are derived. The hot components of this symbiotic star, Cn 1-1 and M 1-2, are shown to be located on the Harman-Seaton sequence in the region of evolved central stars of planetary nebulae (PN). It is suggested that the hot components of some SS may be evolved nuclei of PN, and that the high electron density of their nebulae may be due to mass loss from the respective cool stars of the binaries.
