The period-amplitude relation and period-energy relation for dwarf novae and novae are discussed in light of recent observations. Analyzing the light curves of 30 dwarf novae, the total outburst energy is found to be a more suitable characteristic of the outburst than its amplitude, and it is proportional to the cycle length. In the period-energy relation for SU UMa-type stars, the total outburst energy is found to be proportional to the energy accumulation time, but the normal outbursts and supermaxima originate from different regions. Data support the suggestion (McDonald, 1983) that a thermonuclear runaway is not followed by recurrent novae outbursts. It is suggested that GK Per does not follow the period-amplitude relation, but falls on the period-energy sequence.
