Infrared monitoring of P/Halley has been achieved at the European Southern Observatory from September 1985 to January 1986. The variations of the flux density with time show a regular increase before perihelion and short-term changes (1.5 to 2 magnitudes over 24 hours). The dust spatial distribution is consistent with a constant velocity expansion up to a nuclear distance which ranges from 5000 to 11,000 km, depending upon the date. A silicate signature is visible between 8.5 and 12.5 microns on January 25, and corresponds to a flux excess of about 30 percent over the continuum. The dust temperature ranges between 350 and 400 K on January 25.
