Conditions for the apparent disappearance of Saturn's rings are discussed, considering the following: the earth passing through the plane of the rings, which would then be edge-on to earth; the sun passing through the plane, at which time neither the northern nor southern face of rings receives direct sunlight, and the earth and sun lying on opposite sides of the plane so that the ring face toward the earth is only indirectly illuminated. The earth will pass through the ring plane twice in 1980, affording ideal opportunities to obtain data from Saturn's satellites while eclipsing or occulting one another, or to search for new inner satellites or outer rings. A table presenting all the dissappearances of Saturn's rings from 1612 to 2100 is provided, along with the position of the earth or sun with respect to the ring plane (depending on which body passes through it), and the heliocentric longitudes of the earth and Saturn during each passage.
