The direction in which the spiral pattern in galaxies is rotating relative to the curvature of the arms is discussed, that is, whether the arms are leading or trailing. Attention is given to a criterion (Tsitsin, 1955) for distinguishing the sense of rotation of edgewise galaxies based on the observation that absorbing matter is concentrated along the concave side of spiral arms. Hubble's (1943) hypothesis that all spiral galaxies rotate in the same sense is reinforced by observations which also indicate that trailing arms represent the sole direction of rotation (if the sense of rotation is unique).
