Observations of the strength of the Venus bow shock obtained by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter are reported. Shock crossings were observed as changes in magnetic field strength as the spacecraft in its 24-hour elliptical orbit crossed the bow shock twice a day primarily at solar zenith angles greater than 60 deg. Average jumps in magnetic field strength for 83 bow shock crossings at solar zenith angles from 60 to 110 deg are shown to range from 2.25 to 2.65, compared to an average jump of 3.11 for nine terrestrial shock crossings observed by ISEE spacecraft at a median zenith angle of 72 deg. Reasons for the observed weakness of the Venus shock compared with that of the earth, which has a similar shape, are discussed.
