A quantitative analysis of the UV spectrum of Io obtained by the IUE earth-orbiting telescope in 1978 is performed for the cases of a surface reflectivity which does not exhibit the absorption dip of pure SO2 frost and for a surface reflectivity which reproduces it exactly. The geometric albedo of Io below 320 nm is derived from the observed UV spectrum and the relation between the observed UV spectrum and albedo of Mars. The average transmission of various SO2 atmospheric models in which the frost temperature controls the SO2 vapor pressure are computed and compared with the albedo. It is found that the absorption dip observed in the albedo at around 290 nm can be best represented by an SO2 frost-controlled atmosphere and a surface temperature distribution compatible with that observed. It is concluded that the variations in surface transmission are much smaller than SO2 absorption coefficient variations.
