The paper discusses in some detail a method of magnitude measurement based on the diameter of QSO images in the Palomar Sky Survey prints. As the main objective is to study QSO magnitudes, the discussion is limited to the O-prints for specified reasons. A suitable calibration sequence is proposed. It is shown that the accuracy of magnitude estimation could be improved to about 0.2 mag by having only a few secondary standards per print. The method is used to study the variability of samples of optically- and radio-selected QSOs.
