The principles of aperture synthesis are described and attention is given to the operation of a two-element interferometer based on this procedure. The two-element device samples the Fourier transform of the sky brightness distribution. Consideration is given to the case of earth rotation synthesis with emphasis on east-west interferometers. Some natural limitations of aperture synthesis are described along with ways to overcome them. The image restitution process is considered with emphasis on incomplete synthesis and degraded phase.
