Quasars, Luminosity Function, Spectral Energy Distribution

We used PHOT to carry out photometry at wavelengths of 11.5, 60 and 160 μm of a complete sub-sample of optically selected bright quasars taken from two complete multicolour (U,B,V,R,I) quasar surveys. A preliminary analysis shows that 70 per cent of the objects are detected at least in one band, suggesting that a quite large percentage of optically selected quasars show thermal emission. The aim of our projects is to use these data to investigate the following. (1) Construction of the spectral energy distribution (from UV to radio) of the population to address issues on the relative importance of thermal and non-thermal emission: the inference of the amount of dust in these objects will have profound impact into the torus model and the unification scheme of the Active Galactic Nuclei. (2) Estimation of the bivariate luminosity function: this will tell us how the optical-infrared relation for quasars changes as a function of both luminosity and redshift.
