The Short-Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) is one of the four instruments on-board of ESA's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), launched on 15 Nov. 1995. It covers the wavelength range of 2.38-45.2 μm with a spectral resolution ranging from 1000-2500. By inserting Fabry-Perot filters the resolution can be enhanced by a factor 10 to 20, for the wavelength range from 11.4-44.5 μm. After the successful launch the instrument was tested and calibrated during a period of checkout and performance verification. The instrument appeared to behave extremely well. The performance is on all aspects as expected, except for the detector sensitivity where the noise is dominated by effects from particle radiation. A summary is given of the in-orbit performance and calibration together with a presentation of some highlights of the science obtained with the ISO SWS observations.
