Brightness distributions (such as Log N-Log P or Log N-Log S) can be used to estimate the distance of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For low brightness, one must take into account threshold effects, for instance that a number of bursts were missed because they did not fulfill the trigger criteria. A suggestive method of correction for these threshold effects is the use of the trigger efficiency. Although the trigger efficiency indicates how severe threshold effects are, it does not provide complete information to correct for them. A more sophisticated tool is the trigger response matrix because it preserves the essential distinction between true and observed brightness. We discuss concept issues of how to take threshold effects into account, and illustrate this with calculations specific to BATSE.
