History Of Astronomy: Jupiter Satellites

Scientific paper

This paper describes the theoretical and observational attempts in the 18th century to test Newton's corpuscular theory of light by observing the predicted color changes of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter during eclipse ingress and egress. Scholars with major contributions to this scientific debate were Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan, Thomas Melville, the Marquis de Courtivron, and Alexis-Claude Clairaut. The present essay puts specific emphasis on the work of these scientists.
