Gamma-Ray Bursts: Variability

Scientific paper

The author applies the method of scaled factorial moments to the analysis of temporal variability of gamma-ray bursts. Using this method one is able to estimate for the majority of long bursts their characteristic variability scale, which is called pulse duration time Tp. This new scale is independent from the burst duration time introduced earlier and for most bursts in the sample is of the order of 1.5 s. The author finds also that the average Tp for a group of very bright bursts is a factor of 2 shorter than that of dim bursts. This seem to support the hypothesis on cosmological nature of gamma-ray burst sources.
