U-Th-Pb isotopic systematics were measured in the suspended loads of river water to obtain better estimates of the Pb isotope composition of the earth's upper continental crust. Based on the observed coherent negative correlation between Pb isotope composition and epsilon(Nd) values of suspended load samples, the Pb isotope composition is estimated as follows: Pb-206/Pb-204 = 19.32 +/-0.28, Pb-207/Pb-204 = 15.76 +/-0.09 and Pb-208/Pb-204 = 39.33 +/-0.39. The Pb isotope ratios are positively correlated with Sr-87/Sr-86, except for samples from Isua, which have the highest Nd model ages (about 3.5 Ga). The Pb isotope composition of the Isua samples may suggest a low mu value for the sources of continental crust during the early earth.
