Observed energy distributions in the visual continuum are presented for a dwarf nova at outburst, a dwarf nova at minimum, an old nova, and a nova-like variable. Significant variability occurs in brightness and colors. The dwarf nova at outburst and the nova-like variable are characterized by a moderately blue Paschen continuum and a small but definite Balmer absorption jump. The old nova differs significantly, despite its similar luminosity. Predictions based on the steady-accretion-flow, viscous-disk models do not reproduce the observations.
