An approximation is given for the propagation of an ionization front around a star which suddenly switches on in a neutral, inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that when the density distribution has a scale height H and a typical density n0, the front opens up in a time of about 8pi(n0)H-cubed/L, if the Lyman continuum luminosity L of the star is high enough. After the initial rapid phase, the front very slowly settles into the shape of the equilibrium Stroemgren region. A specific example of this behavior is given in the case of an exponential plane-parallel atmosphere.
