The controversial DP2 is a distinctive current system coupling the magnetosphere to the high latitude ionosphere. Modulated by the interplanetary magnetic field Bz component, the DP2 is distinguished from its DP1 equivalent as part of an equatorward current flow across the auroral oval and into the midlatitude ionosphere in the late morning sector. The real current system model is modified so that the poleward current flow in the post-noon quadrant is attributable to the Sq perturbation pattern, while the equatorward current flow in the pre-noon quadrant is due to the mix of Sq and DP2, and the poleward current flow in the pre-midnight sector is due to DP2 alone. Ionospheric conductivity distribution is the primary regulator of DP2 strength, suggesting that DP2 perturbations would be strongest in the summer months. Three-dimensional models are used and schematic diagrams for high latitude disturbances are presented; linear regression analysis is employed to establish slopes and intercepts of the data, which are then charted along with correlation coefficients to show component relationships.
