The major ions in the stratosphere are proton hydrates and heteromolecular cluster ions, probably formed when the proton hydrates react with a stratospheric trace gas X, thought to be acetonitrile. New positive-ion composition measurements at 34 km have used mass spectrometers which allow for an ion detection limit of 0.1%. Observed mass peaks are identified, and the measured fractional ion count rates are graphed for the major families. Tentative identifications for core ions are given, along with proton affinities for protonated molecules
