We have computed the anisotropy of the microwave background in an expanding universe containing a spherically symmetric density enhancement, having a density contrast of about 1.5 percent on a scale of order 1000 Mpc and centered at a redshift near 3. For a deceleration parameter of 0.35 a dipole variation in the temperature of the background of the observed magnitude is produced. The required values of the deceleration parameter are relatively insensitive to the scale of the inhomogeneity and the location considered here with respect to it. These might be determined by observations of the X-ray background.
