The study models the nebulosity around SN 1987A in the context of the presupernova's blue supergiant (BSG) wind interacting with an asymmetric red supergiant (RSG) wind. A 2D time-dependent hydrodynamics code based on the piecewise parabolic method is employed in the calculation. A model with an average M-dotr of about 2 x 10 exp -5 solar mass/yr and an equator-to-pole density ratio in the RSG wind of about 20 can adequately explain the observations. In this model the shocked RSG wind is radiatively cooling throughout the evolution, whereas the BSG wind has recently passed through a transition from radiatively cooling behind the termination shock to adiabatic throughout the flow. The large asymmetry required in the RSG wind suggests the presence of a binary companion at least during the RSG stage.
