Calculations of Lyman-alpha surface brightness and spectral line profiles from thick massive clouds at high red shift that have been photoionized by the metagalactic background radiation are presented; these are relevant to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich theory of cluster formation. For quasar metagalactic fluxes, two energy distributions are used: a power law with index -1, and a distribution in which the ionizing background arises from emission filtered by dust in intervening galaxies and by Lyman-alpha forest clouds. In a metagalactic flux dominated by stars, recombination dominates Lyman-alpha production. Two different methods are used to estimate the Lyman-alpha emissivity at high red shift arising from the reprocessing of the metagalactic ionizing flux by optically thick clouds, and the contribution to the night sky brightness by the Lyman-alpha photons.
