This paper argues that the comparisons made by Hoegy et al. (1991) of the satellite measurements of ionospheric ion compositions of OGO-6 and AE-C with the empirical ion density models of Koehnlein (1989) are incorrect. It is pointed out that the ion models of Koehnlein represent not just AE-C or OGO-6 data, but the average structure of the data given; hence, a number of individual structures are only summarily resolved.
