The effects of solar UV pumping on OH in comets are calculated, taking into account the hyperfine splitting of the OH levels and the effects of optical depths in the transitions of the Pi state. The results show that, although in general the four ground-state lines should appear close to LTE, deviations from these ratios should be noticeable when the cometary heliocentric velocity is such that the level populations change from inversion to anti-inversion, or vice versa. This resolves previous conflicting findings by different observers. The effects of collisions have also been studied, and they too can introduce deviations from LTE. The quenching of inversion by electron collisions can help to explain the length scale of the radio-detected OH.
