Correlation matrices are calculated for abundances in magnetic Ap, manganese, and Am stars. For the magnetic Ap stars, correlations with temperature, surface field, and photometric peculiarity index are also examined. For the manganese and Am stars the additional parameters are temperature and υ sin i.
A number of highly significant correlations are found, and some which were expected are not found. Numerous correlations noted by previous workers are confirmed. Considerable stress is laid upon the influence of the analytical methods on the final, published abundances, and examples of spurious correlations are given.
The photometric peculiarity parameters, which measure the broad depressions near 4200 and 5200 Å, show close correlations with temperature as well as several elemental abundances. The 5200 Å feature is successfully modeled using multiple regression techniques, and support is found for the hypothesis that the principal atomic absorber is silicon.
