On the basis of a recently proposed distance scale the space
distribution of optically thin planetary nebulae is examined. First, the
new scale is compared with the well-known Seaton-Webster scale. Then,
quantities such as the birthrate, total number in the Galaxy and mass
return to the interstellar medium are estimated.
