The effects of stochastic perturbations in the initial mass function on the upper luminosity boundary of bright O stars are investigated. Several numerical experiments are performed, and it is pointed out that it is not necessary to invoke high rates of mass loss from the most massive stars during the core H-burning phase to account for the upper luminosity boundary of O stars, because the existence of the boundary will turn out to be expected whenever statistical effects are taken into account.
