Recent VLA observations show filamentary structures in many different astrophysical objects as the Galactic Center or extragalactic jets. Analytical calculations of the size and of the nonlinear equilibrium of these filaments are presented. The thermal instability due to synchrotron losses suffered by the relativistic electrons of a magnetized plasma is limited on short scales by a transverse Bohm-like diffusion. The application of our results to the observations of objects so different as extragalactic jets, supernovae remnants or the Galactic Center shows good agreement, and the size of the filaments depends only on the background magnetic field B and is proportional to B exp -3/2.
