The Saturn Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Model (STIM), a suite of 1D and 3D models, has been developed in order to aid interpretation of Cassini observations and to understand the energy balance in Saturn's upper atmosphere. Here we present 1D STIM studies of Saturn's ionosphere for a variety of solar flux models and solar activities. In particular, we assess and compare the photoionization (or primary) and electron-impact (or secondary) ionization rates, and we calculate electron and ion temperatures in Saturn's non-auroral ionosphere. Based on these sensitivity studies, we develop parameterizations for Saturn's ionosphere, which will prove useful for full GCM calculations at Saturn, and possibly for other Jovian and exoplanet models.
