The vertical ion distribution in the Jovian ionosphere is dependent not only on chemistry but also on the dynamics of the neutral atmosphere. The ions are dragged via collisions by the neutrals; in the presence of a strong magnetic field the ions follow the projection of the neutral velocity in the direction of the magnetic field lines. Gravity waves create perturbations in the neutral background winds, altering the dynamics as well as the local atmospheric temperature. They can result in a distinct signature in the ion distribution by creating layers of enhanced ion (electron) density.
This work models the distribution of ions in Jupiter's ionosphere in the presence of gravity waves. Currently, our time-dependent, diffusive, chemical model of the thermospheric-ionospheric region of Jupiter follows the time evolution of the H+, H2+, H3+, He+, HeH+, CH4+, as well as several other hydrocarbon ions as a wave propagates through the region. We look for potentially observable signatures in the distribution of H3+ ions and the ionospheric electron density. Results are presented for a number of ionospheric conditions reflecting different observational constraints (direction of wave propagation, magnetic field orientation, presence of a background wind, dominant ionospheric specie).
