In four years around Saturn, Cassini has collected a large number of infrared observations through its Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) in a wide variety of geometries. We analise the variation of temperature of the main rings (A, B, and C) as function of the solar elevation angle (from -12.1º to -23.5º).
The temperature variations observed by the CIRS experiment, in fairly homogeneous regions of the rings (for the A ring 8 K, for the B ring 12 K and for the diffuse C ring 3 K), seem to be explained by simple analytical models that essentially depend on the solar elevation angle and on the heliocentric distance. For modeling purposes, we assume, on the one hand, that every ring particle is quite close to its neighbors so that the full structure can be taken as a continuous slab and, on the other -the opposite-, that every particle is far enough away from its neighbors, so that their thermal behavior is independent of the others.
