As part of the ROSINA instrument package the Double Focusing Mass Spectrometer (DFMS) will be switched on during ROSETTA's close encounter with asteroid 2867 Steins. This encounter will take place on September 5, 2008.
DFMS is a high resolution (3000 at 1% peak height) mass spectrometer with good sensitivity and a high dynamic range. The instrument will be monitoring m/q=15 and 16 during the flyby in order to detect possible release of atomic Oxygen from the asteroid.
Particle densities around asteroids are, per definition, rather low. Quantitative Monte-Carlo simulations of the asteroid's exosphere showed, that the particle densities close to 2867 Steins are around the detection limits of DFMS. Successful detection will therefore be highly dependent on the stability of the background signal.
At the moment we are working on the calibration of DFMS for these measurements in order to be able to derive a density profile (in case of a successful detection) or, in the worst case, a sensitive upper limit of the exosphere of 2867 Steins. The calibration is done with the reference model of DFMS in the laboratory at the University of Bern.
