The Hayabusa X-ray spectrometer (XRS) performed thermal observations of a near-Earth asteroid Itokawa during the spacecraft descent sequences to collect samples. The scientific goal of the instrument is primarily to measure characteristic X-ray line emissions excited by solar X-rays from major elements in the asteroid surface, but includes thermal radiometry of the asteroid surface with its radiator for passive radiation cooling of the detectors. The radiator was tested and calibrated extensively at the piece-part and instrument levels in the thermal vacuum tests to verify its performance so that can be used to measure the thermal emission of Itokawa, which allows an accurate investigation of the Yarkovsky and YORP effects on the asteroid to be performed.
We present results from comparing between the observed temperature profile and numerically modeled ones using the detailed shape model to determine surface thermal properties of Itokawa.
