The Salyut 6 orbital scientific laboratory is described and missions performed on it are outlined. The spacecraft has two docking units, for manned Soyuz and unmanned Progress spacecraft, with the main living and working areas in between. The dimensions and weight of the station are estimated and thermal regulation, attitude control, navigation and life support systems are discussed. The duties and schedules of the cosmonauts are presented, noting that 33.3% of their work time is spent on earth observation, 33.3% on technological experiments, 16.6% on astronomical observations and 16.7% on biological and medical experiments and observations. The submillimeter telescope and multispectral camera facility on board the spacecraft are described and other experimental equipment presented. Finally, the in-flight refuelling system, designed to enable operation of the station for five years, is detailed.
