Spectroscopy and UBV photoelectric photometry of the interacting galaxy NGC 6240 (VV 617) are reported which confirm that this galaxy has a Seyfert spectrum. The UBV observations yield V = 13.37 mag, B-V = 0.94 mag (0.6 mag corrected for interstellar absorption), and U-B = 0.56 mag (corrected value, 0.3 mag). The nuclear spectrum is found to contain a broad H-alpha line as well as broad forbidden emission lines of N II, S II, O I, and O III. A redshift z = 0.245 + or - 0.0002 is determined, along with a corrected radial velocity of 7440 km/s, a distance of 99 Mpc, a diameter of 50 kpc along the major axis, and an absolute bolometric magnitude of -21.4. The results indicate that NGC 6240 is a rather red Seyfert galaxy that has no perceptible UV excess and contains a large amount of dust.
