The multiple scattering of high-energy cosmic-ray muons in solid-iron magnetic-momentum spectrometers is discussed and the results are compared with experimental measurements. In particular, the spectrometers which record orthogonal views of the muon trajectory are considered. The theory of Moliere is used to derive a multiple-scattering probability distribution which can be directly compared with spectrometer data. This multiple-scattering distribution is independent of the cosmic-ray spectrum, thus allowing cosmic-ray data to be used directly to investigate the predictions of multiple-scattering theory.
