Rb-87-Sr-87 dating has been carried out for small hand-picked pieces from the various components of the gas-rich chondrite Saint Mesmin. The dating indicates that the Saint Mesmin components are 4480 Myr old; many of them were thermally disturbed at a later date. An impact by a foreign body at the surface of the Saint Mesmin parent body is suggested by the presence of a foreign H type component. According to the chronological data, Saint Mesmin may have been formed as recently as 1400 Myr ago from a regolith at the surface of its parent planet.
