The paper presents some broad-scale systematics which allow predictions to be made about the isotopic trends expected from mixing processes in different magmatic environments. These systematics are deduced from a limited body of Nd and Sr isotope data coupled with a model for the chemical stratification of the continental crust, and give a first-order description of Nd and Sr isotope variations in crustal rocks as a function of chemistry and age. Examples of mixing curves are presented, with emphasis placed on the isotopic effects which would be produced by crustal contamination of mantle-derived magmas.
