A simple model is presented which accounts satisfactorily for the observed number-intensity, longitudinal, and latitudinal distributions of galactic X-ray sources (GXRSs) and the diffuse X-ray emission of the galactic disk. The model is based on the assumptions that: (1) most GXRSs contain an extreme Population I object; (2) the birthrate of GXRSs is related to the gas density prevailing at their birthplaces; (3) intrinsically weak sources might be abundant but are currently unresolved; and (4) most GXRSs are runaway systems with an average runaway velocity of the order of 100 km/s. The results obtained suggest that the scale height of binary X-ray sources might depend on galactocentric distance.
